Engineering, Technology, and Medicine
Wendy White, MD · Surgery - Burn, Trauma, Acute and Critical Care Surgery, UT Southwestern/Parkland
I have been a practicing Orthopedic Surgeon for almost 20 years. Having a background in engineering has been a tremendous benefit to me and has made me a better physician. Early in my practice, I began doing some consulting with various manufacturers. I have always approached every procedure with the foundation of my surgical training, but always looking at how can we do this more efficiently, predictably, and with less risk to the patient.
Early in my career, I designed some medical products for various companies. This collaborative effort led to further designs (2nd generation products). Ultimately, I started a (very) small company to make my own products.
I have also been blessed to work with other very talented surgeons and engineers and take care of some wonderful patients. Providing team coverage for athletes has been very rewarding as well.
Hand Surgery
Victoria Knoll, MD · MD, OrthoTexas
Hand surgery is one of many surgical subspecialties. It is a very fascinating and challenging field of medicine. Medicine is much more than a science. Medicine is a trans-disciplinary field that operates at the intersection of many different fields of study. Most doctors cannot do their jobs successfully without the help and cooperation of many other fields of medicine, technology, and research. The lecture will discuss those other areas of science and technology needed to successfully treat patients. The lecture will also inform students on the education needed to become a physician, specifically one in a surgical subspecialty, and explore the many facets of the day in a life of an orthopedic hand surgeon.
Journey not Destination and Shooting with Intention
Jarrod Oram · Owner of Jarrod Oram Photography
Journey not Destination and Shooting with Intention in Large image Digital Photography.
Waiting hours for a car to move out of the frame, the sun to hit in THE perfect spot or the shadow to crawl to its optimal …giving the subject the time, space and beauty it so rightly deserves. After traveling thousands of miles of backroads, desolate places, small towns and heart pulsating metropolises, I use natural light and patience to create a collection of art for for you to bring into your home, office, restaurant or any other rad area.
Semiconductors: The Invention that Transformed the World
Wills Rutherford · Semiconductor Manufacturing Engineer, Samsung Semiconductor
Semiconductors are found in nearly every piece of technology that we use, and they play a critical part in our lives. The recent semiconductor shortage, which caused unprecedented supply chain issues and even exposed a national security crisis, only further demonstrated our reliance on semiconductors. But what even is a semiconductor? Why do we need them, how do they work, and how do we make them? I'll answer all of these questions as I discuss the semiconductor industry and my job as a semiconductor manufacturing engineer.
As a recent college graduate and HPHS alumnus, I'll also discuss my experiences studying engineering and the opportunities that come from it.
The ER, Poisons and Crime Scenes--Stories from the "Front Line" of Medicine
Stacey Hail, MD · Parkland ER Doctor & Medical Toxicologist, North Texas Poison Center
This presentation will include stories and pictures from the ER at Parkland--our nation's busiest emergency department and medicine's "front line." Then learn how my journey in emergency medicine led me to study medical toxicology at the North Texas Poison Center and how I then developed a forensic toxicology practice testifying in Federal drug crime cases involving the opioid epidemic and in murder mysteries.
